Genesis 3:6

If we want to find lasting victory in our lives, we need to understand how the sin cycle works.

Outline

  • First, the Seduction of Sin (3:6)
    • First, Satan tempts our appetites
    • Second, Satan tempts our approval
    • Third, Satan tempts our ambition
  • Second, the submission to sin (3:6)

Christ Connections

  • Sin reverses God’s good design for creation. Woman submits to beast. Man submits to woman. And no one submits to God. God’s creation is destroyed through our disobedience. Yet, God promises that it will be restored through Christ’s obedience.
  • Jesus reverses the sin cycle in Matthew 4. Instead of being surrounded by abundance, he’s surrounded by nothing. He perfectly resists the temptation towards his appetites, his approval, and his ambition. Jesus succeeds where Adam failed.

Applications

  • Pornography is a dangerous temptation towards our appetites. Satan takes a good desire for intimacy and seeks to satisfy it with forbidden fruit.
  • Eve takes before she sinned. How do we take before we sin today? You might take your browser into private mode before moving into deeper sin. You may take on too much stress or too little sleep setting you up for an outburst of anger.
  • Who we surround ourselves with either strengthen or sabotage us. Eve was sabotaged by her people. What are the people around you doing? Seek a community of people that will help you avoid temptation.
